Abode for Children is a 501(c)3 non-profit, public charity, headquartered in Evans City, PA. Children are our future and Abode for Children is committed to providing a solid education combined with nurturing care, food, and shelter to children in some of the poorest regions of the world. Currently we have built and are maintaining an orphanage and school in both Nigeria, Africa and in Andhra Pradesh, India.
Abode for Children cares for these children through partnerships with local indigenous groups and with committed sponsors, to provide food, clothing and shelter, along with an education based on moral values and Christian principles. The goal is to offer a life-changing atmosphere where children are motivated and guided to become productive citizens in their respective countries.
Abode for Children is an outgrowth of a private charitable foundation – Gospa Missions, founded by Thomas Rutkoski, a former award-winning photojournalist of KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1995, while on a trip to Africa with his wife Mary, Mr. Rutkoski observed an enormous depth of poverty and the desperate plight of so many abandoned children. Upon returning from his trip, he abandoned his prestigious career in order to create opportunities for children in need.
In 1996, the orphanage and school were established as a result of the generosity of hundreds of donors who shared Mr. Rutkoski’s passion for improving the lives of children in one of the poorest sections of Africa. In Ogoja, Cross River State, Nigeria, there are untold numbers of children whose parents by natural death, illness, accidents, or inter-village wars
- are so sick they can no longer care for their little ones
- are so poor that it becomes virtually impossible to afford one good meal a day
- have abandoned them because they are now seen as burdens
From infancy, these children are denied the basic necessities of life: food, clothing, medical care, education, and hope. Today at St. Joseph, there are more than 800 children receiving an education, including 160 residents of the orphanage who are beneficiaries of the generous hearts who donate or sponsor through Abode for Children.
In response to the 2004 tsunami which affected different parts of India, Abode for Children’s territory was broadened to include India. Abode for Children received sufficient funds to begin groundbreaking for an orphanage and school in 2006, near the city of Cherukupalli in southeastern India. Both buildings opened in June 2007 with an orphanage capacity of 80 boys and a school capacity of 600 children. A church and convent were added in 2011. Construction of a girls’ orphanage was completed in May 2014.
