Riya is the older of two children. She has a younger brother, Harshavardhan. Their father, Swami, committed suicide, attributed to alcoholism. Their mother, Sivaleela, is unskilled and works as a day laborer, trusting in God's providence. Riya wants to study well so she can help her mother and little brother have a better life. Riya is enthusiastic and good-natured. She likes to read and play kabaddi.
